I’m not sure how my days just keep ticking away and I can’t seem to remember what day it is. When guiding is this busy, I guess I need to set an alarm. It kind of feels like Groundhog’s Day.
The ice conditions on Devils Lake have definitely changed since last week. This cold snap is putting some ice down and doing it fast. But as the ice grows, the fishing slows, unfortunately. Hopefully after this violent change in the weather settles down, so will the fishing.
Currently on Devils Lake, it’s more of a “one day you get them, the next maybe not” scenario. It seems like most days we are seeing plenty of fish, just not a lot of biters. My gut feeling is the fish have plenty to eat and there’s no competition to find food. It’s easy pickings out there.
Mornings have been best for walleyes on Devils Lake. Nothing fancy, buckshots and minnow heads are doing most of the heavy lifting. Perch seem to be a little more unpredictable. If you find that magic stick, you’ll catch a bunch. If you are off by just a coffee table’s length, you may not even mark any. It seems like minnow heads on small spoons are best for them right now also.
