COLOR UP! Alright, there’s been a lot of gray skies, white flakes, and beige cover on the Daily Edge, leaving things a bit monochromatic as of late, so let today’s installment serve as a reminder that you can color up your winter season when you feel the need to. Tie up a few flies, jigs, spinners or other lures in pink, orange, chartreuse, or another day-glo hue and feel your spirits rise and thoughts turn to warmer weather. In the process, make a few for a friend, and you’ve got your Christmas shopping done — at least in part!

NOVEMBER NOTES. The NDG&F has released the November issue of North Dakota Outdoors magazine, with insight into the upcoming deer season and a look ahead to the ice fishing season, with likely hardwater destinations in all six fisheries districts. Along with that, a look ahead to a beneficial partnership between the NDG&F and the ND Forest Service to begin better management of forests in the state’s ruffed grouse range. Read up!
BUGGER OFF. The basic woolly bugger can be summed up in three parts: marabou tail, chenille body, soft hackling. From there, it’s easy to go nuts, add a bright bead head, tack on some sili legs, run some flash, wire or other fun accents and it can be the wildest pattern in the box. Give it a shot this winter, and create some color for your fly box.
THREE AND A HALF. Don’t forget the half! We’re just 84 hours away from the start of deer season, and as we dip into double digits, take this time to map out your hunting plans. Check the prevailing winds, use maps from Google and the NDG&F to get a lay of the land and set out the strategy for your opening weekend efforts.
