HOLE IN ONE. Looking ahead, midweek brings a warm spike and a hole in an otherwise cool stretch. In the meantime, we’re filling the gaps in our fly boxes and lures by tying up a bunch of new offerings during the still-chilly evenings. We talk about blade options on spinners in today’s Three Things.

HATCHET MAN. Hatchet style blades have a loping swing to them, providing a different spin and flash. Mixing up the standard elongated Indiana-style blade by cutting it in half, hatchets might take a bit more to get going, but they do provide a unique look and whir in the water.
ALL SMILES. Smile blades typically are a thin sheet of plastic with a foil finish to provide that baitfish flash. Light and fairly easy to spin, they provide a variation that few other blades can, in prime part due to their across-the-line attachment. In recent years, due to their light weight, many have found success adding them to slow-death rigs, as metal blades interfere with the swirling worm action.
GOOD VIBRATIONS. Hole-in-the-blade options like the Viborado also kick out a little extra something-something. With a hole in the center of the metal blade, it’s a different look and feel for your lure making efforts – and something the fish might not see all that often. Experiment with all the great modern lure-making options now and try them out this spring and summer!
