Daily Edge for Sat. May 5

HEADS UP! Our streak of great weekends continues today, as temps settle into the 70s for highs and fishing action continues to heat up around the region.  The Big Muddy is happening today on the Missouri River in Bismarck-Mandan, so check out the boats as you pass over the I-94 bridge on your fishing trip or other travels. We talk about that and more in today’s Three Things.

LORDS OF SUMMER.  Ready, set, GO! Tournament season is underway, and along with the Big Muddy, more than a dozen other events are slated for the month of May.  Fire up the outboard and tear up the water in search of walleyes, bass and other species each weekend and add a little competition to your summer.

DON’T BE BITTERN.  Spring is here, and migratory birds like the American bittern can be found in a number of North Dakota’s wetlands.  When startled, this species will strike a pose, standing tall with an elongated neck amidst shoreline cover like cattails and reeds to blend in with the vegetation.  The males are highly territorial and emit a noticeable “pump-er-lunk” call that has earned them a variety of onomatopoeic  nicknames.

HALFWAY HOME.  The North Dakota State High School Clay Target League is host to over 1400 high school trap shooters from 49 schools, and the season is now at its halfway point.  Check out the standings and the top guns at ndclaytarget.com and learn more about the state tournament in Horace on June 16 & 17 at nd.traptournament.com.

Stay sharp!
