Daily Edge for Sat. Dec. 29

ON THE UPSWING (For Now). Temperatures moderate for the weekend, but we dip again for the New Year’s holiday as sportsmen set out on the ice once again during ND’s free fishing weekend, and those upland hunters look to close out their season on the penultimate weekend (go deeeeeep!).  We cover those topics and more in today’s Three Things.

THREE THINGS

UP & DOWN.  Southerly breezes bring the warmth today after hitting our first sub-zero night of the winter yesterday (-6). Enjoy it while it lasts as changes for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will have us feeling the smack of Ol’ Man Winter once again, with double-digit below-zero lows when the ball drops on Jan. 1 and windchills approaching -30! Yikes.  It might hit 40 next Thursday.  Enjoy the ride!

LIGHT SHOW.  If you were up for it yesterday and able to get out of the driveway, the sunrise was spectacular, thanks to the cold atmosphere and ice crystals still in the sky from the snow system the day before.  As evidenced in our featured photo, a combination of some seriously strong sundogs and tall light pillars at sunrise – both aided by the abundance of airborne ice crystals – made sunrise a sight to see!

FEELIN’ FREE.  Don’t forget to grab an old fishing buddy – or a new one – and hit the ice today as part of North Dakota’s Free Fishing Weekend.  Today and tomorrow, anglers can fish without a license and experience the fun of ice angling.

Stay Sharp!
