Daily Edge for Mon. 10/14 – Around the Region

TAKE A TOUR. When you’re done checking out the snowfall totals from last week’s storm, take another trip around the broader region to see what’s happening in the outdoors of surrounding states in today’s Outdoors Roundup.  Insight into hunter numbers in MN, firearm regulations in SD and upland improvements in MT all provide ideas to make things better here at home.

MN HUNTER DECLINE.  The Minnesota DNR posted some surprising results in its small game hunter survey, showing a decline in hunter numbers (about 55,000 lost since 2010), along with a 30 percent drop last year in the harvest of its signature upland bird – the ruffed grouse.  While the pheasant harvest was up, concern to the east is growing as sportsmen dollars fund wildlife management and conservation.

SD KEEPS IT BASIC.  The SD Game Fish & Parks Commission rejected a petition to allow magnifying scopes on muzzleloader firearms for blackpowder hunting, keeping with the idea of the challenge of the more primitive options for that season.  1x scopes will still be allowed, as before.

UPLAND MAGIC IN MT.  The Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks showcased a tour of its Upland Game Bird Enhancement projects which took root over the summer.  The program has improved 27,772 acres and created more than107,000 new access acres.
