THREE THINGS
CHIPPER.  Inspect eyelets up and down a fishing rod for chips, cracks or other wear.  The slightest chip can become a line-cutting razor and pressure from a charging fish can easily break the line as a result.  Also inspect the blank for any damage that might hinder performance or result in a snapped rod.

STAY SEATED.  Check out the reel seat on each rod to be assured of a secure connection.  Locking mechanisms should be easily loosened and tightened without a whole lot of cranking and when a reel is put in place it should be held firmly in place and not wiggle free over time.

CLEAN HOUSE.  With a damp cloth, go over each rod from tip to butt and clean off any dust, dirt or grit that can impact performance, become lodged in the reel below or wedge between line and eye and create unnecessary friction.  You’re good to go!

Stay Sharp!
