GET GREASY.  Clean any gunk, dirt, line fragments or debris out from around the center pin of spinning reels and add a drop of reel oil to them to make sure drag and spool motion stay fluid.  When reassembling, make sure that all parts make it back on – in order!

TEST DRAG.  Know where your drag needs to be for a firm hookset without line slippage.  Pull forcefully on the line (wear a glove) to find the mark – either with a spinning reel or baitcaster and add a tiny line with permanent marker to that position, so you know where to turn your drag back to after a battle.

POWER UP.  Switching out standard reel handles with power handles can help provide more leverage over big fish like pike, catfish, muskies and lake sturgeon.  Most brands have specific model options that replace shorter two-knob versions with a large-knobbed power crank.
